John 16:5-15 – What will we do without him?

Introduction

The great the great advantage believers have this side of redemptive history – we have the Holy Spirit.

Very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away (16:7)

How is this for our good? (v7-8)

Without Jesus physically, but not ultimately.

Pedalling through life

God’s presence will be known through the Holy Spirit – what’s the benefit?

- He personally indwells us.

- The Holy Spirit is not bound by flesh.

What then is the work of the Holy Spirit?

The work of conviction (v8-11):

· Of sin…

· Of “righteousness” …

· Of judgement…

The work of instruction (v12-15):

· Divine truth is not like an academic discipline.

· He guides us into all the truth.

Conclusion

Questions:

1) Do you think it’s harder or easier to be a Christian today compared to the disciples’ time when they had Jesus physically with them? Why/ why not?

2) Have you ever wished you could meet Jesus physically and ask Him questions face to face? How does this passage challenge or comfort that longing?

3) Verse 8 says the Spirit convicts the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment. How do you see this work happening in our world today?

4) How does the Holy Spirit’s work of conviction encourage us in our daily walk with God?

5) Jesus says the Spirit will “guide you into all the truth” (v13). How is this different from simply gaining more Bible knowledge?

6) Can you think of a time when the Spirit made God’s Word come alive for you in a new or deeper way?

7) How can we rely more consciously on the Holy Spirit’s presence in our daily walk with God?
