Application Questions for John 16:16–33 — “Reasons for Joy”

  • How have you experienced the kind of “joy that no one can take away” (v.22)?
What difference does it make in your life knowing that this joy is grounded in what Jesus has done, not how you feel?
  • What burdens are you currently carrying that you might need to stop asking God to remove — and instead ask for a stronger back to carry?
How can Jesus' resurrection and promised return reshape your perspective in these situations?
  • Jesus encourages us to pray directly to the Father in His name (v.24).
How confident and regular is your personal prayer life right now? What might be holding you back from asking boldly?
  • Reflect on this: “Joy is complete when practiced in a relationship with God.”
How does your current relationship with God reflect that completeness — and where might it be lacking?
  • We often long for Jesus’ physical presence — but He’s given us the Holy Spirit instead.
How aware are you of the Holy Spirit’s work in your daily life? In what ways do you experience His empowerment, conviction, or comfort?
  • When life gets difficult, Jesus doesn’t promise to remove the trouble — He promises peace in the midst of it (v.33).
What does this peace look like for you practically? How do you access or cultivate it when the world feels overwhelming?
  • Jesus’ final words in this passage are, “Take heart! I have overcome the world.”
What would it look like for you to “take heart” this week in a specific area where you feel defeated, afraid, or weary?
